Making walking part of your day

Walking can be a practical form of activity. Start from your current ability and judge progress by more than the scale.

Physical activity does not require a gym. Walking can fit a commute, a break or time with someone else, although access, pain and mobility needs vary.

Choose a repeatable starting point

Try a short route or a few minutes at a comfortable pace. If that is manageable, gradually adjust duration or pace. An indoor route or another accessible form of movement may be more suitable on some days.

Think beyond calories

Regular activity supports health, but a walk does not guarantee a particular weight change. Fitness, daily function and enjoyment can be useful outcomes too. An activity-calorie tool gives an estimate, not an exact amount you need to “eat back”.

Combine activities when appropriate

Walking and muscle-strengthening activity can complement each other. Adapt the plan to your ability and seek advice if symptoms or health conditions make exercise uncertain. Stop and obtain appropriate help for concerning symptoms rather than pushing through them.
